Dos & Don'ts

Dos

Don'ts

  • Treat your goldfish with respect.
  • Be aware that goldfish are one of the hardest fish to keep and are not suitable for young children to look after.
  • Change water reguarly, but not too often. A 25% water change once a week or 50% once a fortnight.
  • gently rinse your filter media in old tank water taken during a partial water change. This will preserve the good bugs that eat the toxins while removing the loose debris which causes the poor water conditions
  • Invest in a gravel vacuum.
  • Get a timer for your tank light to simulate day and night - goldfish need sleep too.
  • Invest in a water testing kit and test your water regularly.
  • Provide a stimulating environment with plenty of live plants.

  • Do NOT keep goldfish in bowls. If you keep your goldfish in a bowl, please email me your address, so that I can come round and kick you.
  • Never use soap anywhere near a tank or a goldfish
  • Don't overfeed your goldfish, no matter how much he begs for food, one idea is to never give more than an eyeball sized piece of food at a time.
  • Don't keep too many goldfish together, goldfish are dirty they need 10 gallons of water each!
  • Don't use an underwater gravel filter, they are not powerful enough.
  • Don't buy a bio-orb, they are not suitable for keeping goldfish.
  • Don't tap the glass, if your goldfish is lying on the bottom of the tank, it is probably asleep - goldfish sleep on the bottom.
  • Don't touch your goldfish, they are specially coated and your fingers will remove their protective coating.
  • Don't add tap water directly to the tank, use a water additive to remove the chemicals and make it safe.
